World’s first hard drives with capacity of 12TB from HGST   Date: Tuesday, 21 February 2017

HGST Ultrastar He12

HGST first introduced 3,5” hard drives with a capacity of 12TB. The new series HE12 is the fourth generation that uses Helioseal technology. Filled with helium, drives offer possibilities to increase capacity for perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR), because they can work with more plates than traditional air-solutions . The new generation has eight plates, so even one more plate than in the previous HE10 series. The new design increased the capacity by 20%, while maintaining a MTBF of 2.5 million hours, which is the best result compared to competing solutions, where the standard is 2million hours.

The manufacturer highlights that the new series compared to the eight-terabytes solutions which are filled with air, consumes up to 54% less energy per Watt per terabyte and is 25% more reliable. The new series will be available in the traditional version of the SAS 12GB /s and SATA 6Gb /s, and for each interface will also be available with the sector emulated 512 or native 4096 bytes. Additionally, when ordering you can choose a model with Instant Secure Erase (ISE), allowing secure, instant data erase after the withdrawal of disk use, and will also be available Self Encrypting Drive (SED) versions, which support hardware encryption on the fly.
