
WD Ultrastar® JBODs combined with SMR HDDs and SMR-aware file systems such as SaunaFS or VaultFS deliver a modern active archive architecture built for petabyte-scale data growth, long retention periods, and sustainable economics.
SMR technology improves overall storage economics by increasing usable capacity per drive and reducing the total cost of the solution - not just the drive. Fewer drives, fewer racks, lower power usage, and longer refresh cycles all contribute to a significantly lower cost per terabyte.
Shingled Magnetic Recording enables aproximately 20% more capacity from the same physical footprint compared to conventional recording methods. WD's UltraSMR impementations can etend this advantage further, allowing customers to store petabytes data within the smae spaceand power envelope.
SMR-based JBOD architectures scale simply and predictably-from a single JBOD to multi-petabyte deployments. Paired with SMR-aware file systems such as SaunaFS o VaultFS, capacity and performance scale linearly while operational complexity remains low, making low term data growth easy to manage.
